What Is Port Wine?

Port is a fortified wine from the Douro Valley of northern Portugal. Grape spirit added during fermentation preserves natural sugar, creating a wine that is both sweet and high in alcohol (19-22% ABV).

The Major Styles

Ruby Ports

  • Ruby Port: Basic style, youthful and fruity, aged in large vats. 3-5 years old.
  • Reserve Ruby: More concentration and complexity, still fruit-forward.
  • Late Bottled Vintage (LBV): Single vintage, aged 4-6 years in barrel. Rich and ready to drink.
  • Vintage Port: The pinnacle. Declared only in exceptional years, aged 2-3 years then bottle-aged for decades. Built to age 20-50+ years.

Tawny Ports

  • Tawny Port: Aged in small oak barrels. Color evolves to amber; flavors shift to dried fruit, nuts, and caramel.
  • 10 Year Tawny: Fresh dried fruit, light nuttiness
  • 20 Year Tawny: Caramel, dried apricot, roasted nuts. The sweet spot.
  • 30 Year Tawny: Concentrated and ethereal
  • 40 Year Tawny: Rare, transcendent complexity
  • Colheita: Single vintage tawny, minimum seven years in barrel.

Other Styles

  • White Port: Dry to sweet. Dry White Port with tonic is a classic Portuguese aperitif.
  • Rosé Port: Fresh, fruity, served chilled as a summer aperitif.

Food Pairing

  • Vintage Port: Stilton blue cheese, dark chocolate
  • 20 Year Tawny: Crème brûlée, pecan pie, foie gras
  • LBV: Chocolate cake, berry desserts, bold cheeses
  • Dry White Port: Chilled with salted almonds and olives
  • Ruby Reserve: Smoked ribs with sweet glaze

Serving and Storage

  • Ruby styles: 60-64°F. Consume within 2-3 weeks of opening.
  • Tawny styles: 55-60°F. Keep 2-3 months once opened.
  • Vintage Port: Decant 2-4 hours. Drink within 2-3 days of opening.

The Investment Angle

Great vintages (1963, 1977, 1994, 2007, 2011, 2016) from top producers (Taylor's, Fonseca, Graham's, Dow's, Quinta do Noval Nacional) appreciate significantly. Port remains one of fine wine's great undervalued categories.
